Sticks and Stones and Stories – Storytelling for Self and Survival. Storytelling to fight back. Storytelling in Solidarity
The more we are injured by oppressive institutions and trauma in our lives, the more we are identified by the stories told about us, and not the stories we share about ourselves. This event is about sharing personal experiences of forcible displacement. That can happen through incarceration, deportation, detention, eviction, or other systems that exist to confine us to a single identity: criminal, unfit, illegal, homeless, invisible. We can fight that violence against us. We can share something about our lives and how we see ourselves, and find love and support in the process. That solidarity makes us infinitely more powerful, unstoppable, and ready to fight back! Join us.

LA, San Francisco, New Haven, DC, Chicago, Albuquerque, NYC, New Paltz, Syracuse, Philadelphia
On March 8, International Women’s Day, WORD (Women Organized to Resist and Defend) will hold actions in cities across the United States. We will be taking to the streets in defense of women’s rights, which are under attack on many different fronts. Marissa Alexander’s case—among many others—highlights the contradictions of a society that punishes victims of abuse when they defend themselves. Marissa Alexander is a 33-year-old African American woman, mother, and survivor of domestic violence. Under mandatory minimum sentencing laws, Marissa was sentenced to 20 years in prison for defending herself against an abuser in the same state that let George Zimmerman walk free. Though the original sentence was thrown out by the judge, Marissa is still being prosecuted and State Prosecutor Angela Corey has announced she intends to seek a 60-year sentence. All charges against Marissa should be dropped! We must stand with Marissa, demand her freedom, and fight to end all forms of violence against women!

We will gather in Market Square at Noon then March to the District Attorney’s office at 1 pm. where we will be delivering a letter to Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala calling upon him to reopen the case of Charmaine Pfender and to drop the charges against her. Charmaine Pfender was 19 years old when she was sentenced to life without parole for defending herself against rape. She has been in prison for 30 years. Charmaine is one of many survivors in prison for defending herself against sexual assault. We will also rise for Marissa Alexander who in 2012, was sentenced to twenty years in the Florida criminal correctional system for defending herself from her abusive estranged husband. Marissa successfully appealed the trial, overturning the guilty verdict on 9/26/13. On 11/26/13, Marissa was finally released on bond and is currently under house arrest. Her new trial is scheduled for 7/28/14. This event will continue to be held in the memory of Ka’Sandra Wade who was murdered on January 2, 2013 by her boyfriend and father of her child as a final act of intimate partner violence.
